  5. MODEM FEATURES

  7.       The following features and capabilities
  8.       assure you of superior reliability and
  9.       performance from your USRobotics modem.
  10.    Error Control_V.42/MNP 2O4
  11.       Data integrity is ensured when Sportster
  12.       14,400  modems con-nect with remote
  13.       modems that use the V.42 (LAPM) or MNP
  14.       error-control protocols.  Error control
  15.       is available on calls at 1200 bps and
  16.       above.
  17.    Data Compression_V.42 bis/MNP 5
  18.       Data compression enables throughput of
  19.       up to 57,600 bits per second (bps) on
  20.       14,4K bps connections.  The data
  21.       compression technique used depends on
  22.       the remote modem's capabilities.  If the
  23.       modems connect under V.42 error control,
  24.       they can use V.42 bis compression.  If
  25.       they connect under MNP error control,
  26.       they can use MNP Level 5 compression.
  27.       Achievable throughput for text files and
  28.       other file types is listed at the end of
  29.       Appendix A.
  30.    Flow Control/Variable Interface Rates
  31.       Flow control, required under error
  32.       control, allows the rate at the computer
  33.       interface to be set higher than the rate
  34.       over the phone line.  This feature
  35.       provides greater efficiency and
  36.       throughput.  If your computer and
  37.       software support the higher rate, you
  38.       can transfer data between the computer
  39.       and modem at 38,400 bps, regardless of
  40.       the phone line rate.
  41.    Fax Capability_Sportster 14,400 Fax Modems
  42.       If you've chosen to purchase a Sportster
  43.       modem with fax capabilities, you can use
  44.       your modem in Class 1 facsimile mode for
  45.       sending or receiving faxes.
  46.    Programmable Nonvolatile Memory
  47.       You can tailor your own default settings
  48.       and store them in nonvolatile random
  49.       access memory (NVRAM).  As long as DIP
  50.       switch 7 is set UP, the Sportster 14,400
  51.       operates at the settings you've
  52.       specified each time the computer is
  53.       powered on or reset.
  54.    Link Rate Negotiation
  55.       The Sportster 14,400  automatically
  56.       lowers its connection rate to match a
  57.       remote modem's lower rate, in both
  58.       Originate and Answer modes.  This allows
  59.       connections with a wide range of in
  60.       stalled modems.  When answering higher
  61.       speed calls, the modem also shifts back
  62.       up again.
  63.    Modem Diagnostics
  64.       The modem performs three loopback tests:
  65.       analog, digital, and remote digital.
  66.       See Appendix F for information.
  67.    Inactivity Timer
  68.       You can set the modem to automatically
  69.       hang up after a specified number of
  70.       minutes if there is no data activity on
  71.       the line.
  72.    Call Progress Detection
  73.       An optional set of result codes (screen
  74.       messages) lets you know when a line is
  75.       busy or there is no dial tone.
  76.    Modem Settings Display
  77.       On command, the modem displays its
  78.       current settings, a handy way to check
  79.       your transmission rate, S-Registers and
  80.       other operational controls.  The modem
  81.       also displays the defaults stored in
  82.       nonvolatile memory and the factory
  83.       defaults stored permanently in read-only
  84.       memory.
  85.    HELP Screens
  86.       The modem displays screens that
  87.       summarize the command sets, Dial command
  88.       options, and S-Register functions.
  89.    Bottom Panel Reference
  90.       Summaries of important commands and
  91.       other information are printed on the
  92.       bottom of the modem case.  A Dual In-
  93.       Line Package (DIP) switch guide makes it
  94.       easy to tailor the switch settings to
  95.       your terminal and software requirements.
  96.    Stored Phone Number
  97.       Write your most frequently used phone
  98.       number to NVRAM.  Then type a brief
  99.       command to have the modem dial the
  100.       number.
  101.    Quote Mode
  102.       Set the modem to Quote mode if you want
  103.       it to dial an alpha-betic acronym
  104.       instead of a number.
